Winter Pastry: Pommes Cuites (Cooked Apples) at Le Plancher des Vaches in Valloire

Whenever I am in a new place I am always looking out to trying the regional cuisine in a restaurant or cafe with a nice ambiance. It does not have to be the most popular dish in town in a very swanky place, but at least it should be something new to me and locally made. I am glad to report that I found a lovely place, a creperie and bar restaurant that serves favourite local pastries.

One of my food discoveries in Valloire and one of the perfect winter pastries.

Before the trip I did hours of research online about places for apres ski drink and restaurants to eat in Valloire, but because this ski village is rather small and not many people really blog their winter sport holidays, and if ever they do, they usually write in their own European language, the proactive research proved less fruitful. I would be lucky to see a blog or review in English or Dutch, and if I ever find one, they tend to write about the slope situation and rarely about the gourmet side of things. Because of this, I am all the more resolved to blog about everything I did, saw, ate, experienced and encountered during my holidays. Not only for my own sake of journaling but for others as well who want to come prepared, be inspired, are curious or just want to know.

Restaurant (no website): Le Plancher des Vaches Creperie-Bar
Address: Rue de Tigny (near the Cret de la Brive Gondola Station)

Cooked apples are a popular winter pastry because they are warm and filling.

When we entered the restaurant I quickly spied some interesting yet delicious looking pastry sitting on the bar counter, so I stopped for a moment and asked the man behind the bar what it is. He said, ‘La Pommes!’

My French vocabulary is horrible, but luckily I understand what pomme means. I knew right away at that moment what to order.

We both ordered the Pommes Cuites. For drinks, I settled for a Kir au Vin de Savoie and Dutchman a Chocola Chaud.

The place quickly  filled up. We initially sat beside the fireplace but I cannot handle too much heat so we moved to another table.

When the pommes cuites arrived, they were love at first sight!

One big cooked apple glazed with some honey and quickly grilled in de oven, another small cooked apple which tasted like it has been drenched in some liquor, sidings of chocolate caramel nut ice cream and whipped cream, and lastly, garnished with toasted almonds and powdered sugar.

This is serious competition to the Dutch Appelbol! Read here: A not-so-secret Pastry in Utrecht: Appelbol (Apple Ball) at Graaf Floris and here Dutch Appelbol

Ummm, lekker. Delicieux… I tell you we both wiped our plates clean.

The creperie restaurant and bar is nicely and cosily designed, Savoyard style. Great ambiance! The alpine area in France is part of the Savoie (Savoy) Region.

The bar area.

Apres ski in Valloire. Many winter sport holidaymakers in Valloire tend to be the older ones, families with children and older couples (middle age to seniors).

They want me to take a picture of them! The smiling and friendly cooks!

This is an exquisite food discovery for me here in Valloire. If you ever come to this place, do visit this lovely restaurant – creperie – bar. They have a very nice ambiance, very cosy Savoyard-style interior design and fitted with a traditional fire place, a small bar with an outdoor terrace as well. Their speciality is crepes and I guess cooked apples as well.
