The city hosts the ‘Tallinn Old Days’, a medieval event in the old city that runs for a week in the beginning of summer, which usually falls on the last week of May until the 1st of June. This is not to confuse with the other big ‘Medieval Festival’,during the high season summer in the city, usually celebrated in the second week of July.
Although the European Medieval Period was a turbulent one, filled with unthinkable savagery and unnecessary bloodshed, one cannot deny the fairytale aura of this period that leaves us breathless in a world of neverending journey of fantasies and dreams. It is also the period of innovation and art explosion, as well as when religion and power forged its union.

During this week, the streets of Tallinn Old Town goes back in time. There are musical concerts, street performances and theatre festivals, as well as other fun and sports activities.
I was lucky to be in Tallinn during the week that they kicked-off the event. I am always curious about the European Medieval Period and it is such a shame that in the Netherlands we have very few of these re-enactment activities in the cities. The Dutchman for example has nothing positive to say about this period except being thankful that he was not born during the Middle Ages.
But, let me indulge a bit in some medieval Tallinn alright?
Vana Tallinn Coffee at Peppersack

For the connoisseur at heart, I suggest an order of coffee with some local spirits, the Vana Tallinn Liqueur. They are served everywhere in the city and is similar to the Irish Coffee. Instead of whisky (Irish Coffee), they put rum (Vanna Tallinn Coffee). Another product is Vana Tallinn Cream Liqueur which is similar to Baileys.
I ordered mine at Peppersack Restaurant on its outdoor cafe terrace. I had a good view of the street where a few lads and lassies dressed in medieval garb were doing their performance rounds. The waitresses at the cafe was dressed as well back in time.
I also managed to look inside the interior of Peppersack Restaurant and oh dear me, I just wished I had an extra night in Tallinn so I can have dinner here.
Do not forget, the last week of May is the Tallinn Old Town Days and make sure you try the local gourmet coffee – Vana Tallinn Coffee.
