A Tale of Raciones Lunch and Mucous at Lizarran, Placa de la Independencia, Girona

A great place to sit down and watch the world in Girona go by is at the Placa de la Independencia.

Raciones at Lizarran, Placa de la Independencia
Website: Lizarran – Pinchos, Tapas, mucho y mas

The plaza has a very regal ambiance decorated with colonnaded courtyards that used to be a monastery, nowadays the buildings are offices, cafes and restaurants with outdoor terraces extending on the plaza. The whole atmosphere is very Spain. Or must I say Catalan? This Catalan = Spanish dilemma has really gotten into me. Alas, at the very end we are all the same anyway…

I had my first night’s dinner here at the plaza at Konig but I came back for lunch because its much more fun to hang out here during the day.

I also found a great tapas-raciones-pinchos restaurant. Just perfect I thought for my lunch. Lizarran serves all kinds of tapas and pinchos throughout the day, as well as raciones which are small portions of dishes. It can be very difficult to choose when you are confronted with a wide array of delicious finger food but I managed to decide on a racion of jamon and egg on a bed of fries.

The restaurant has branches all over Spain (especially in the north) and outside the country as well.

This is what I ordered, a racion which is a small portion of a dish… eggs and jamon iberico on a bed of fried potatoes. They warmed this up for me and served it nicely on a plate.

My racion lunch + coffee and view to the plaza.

This is a very lovely lunch that I very much enjoyed. I would go back here at Lizarran if I ever find myself back in Girona.

4.3 stars out of 5 in my connoisseur book =)

The Mucous Tale I Can Never Forget

I decided to stay for a little bit at the restaurant. It’s nice to just sit back at the outdoor terrace, enjoy the lovely weather, appreciate the view, engage in some people watching and just really ponder about nothing. However my interlude was brazenly interrupted by a somewhat dishevelled man who sat next to my table. Looking at his unkempt hair and how he was dressed, I do not think he was right in the mind. He was clearly not well. His nose was also filled with green mucous phlegm that were desperately hanging from his nose ridge, clinging like cobwebs of sticky slime. Everytime he breathes in and out, the green mucous enlarges like a flimsy little balloon. At certain times it looked like it was about to explode. I cannot help but feel disgusted, as if the bowels of my stomach are about to run through to my throat.

Nevertheless, I was thankful that I have just finished my lunch. While doing my best not to look at him, I did however wonder at the back of my mind if the bubbly and gooey snot will ever dislodge from his nose and fall down on the page of the book he is reading.

I know it has been 6 months since I was there and saw this unusual man but unfortunately I can still remember everything clearly, including the sickening feeling at the back of my tongue like it was just yesterday.

The porticoes and the black and white tile design on the floor makes the plaza really elegant.
