Food Market: Mercat del Lleo in Girona, Spain

Loving life and enjoying food are a testimony that goes together in my book…

Mercat del Lleo
Website: Mercat del Lleo de Girona
Location: Placa Calvet i Rubalcaba
Opening times: 07:00 to 14:00 daily except on weekends until 14:30

I adore food markets, they make me happy. That simple really. Perhaps it has something to do with the vivid colours, the pungent smell, the energy of the trade, the freshness of the produce and the variety of food. My visits to a new place are always highlighted with a local market scene experience.

Although there were very few articles in English about this market in Girona, it did not take long for me to find Mercat del Lleo online, and quickly scheduled myself a visit on a weekend morning. There is an underground parking just below the market square so for shoppers with cars it is very handy.

Here is a photo essay of Mercat del Lleo, the biggest food retail market in Girona.

Dried fish brings me back to my roots. The island of Cebu where I was born is famous in the Philippines as well as in Asia for its variety of dried fishes. Tabo-an Market has become a tourist attraction even, bringing local and foreign tourists dried sea food shopping jaunts.

Quite a hideous looking monster fish… but I will eat it.

Looks like these fishes are stuck in their ballet dancing routine.

You will never see a head of a pig being sold in the Netherlands (or I dare say in northern Europe) unless you go to one of those ethnic food shops. Hmm anyway, let me count the ways on how to prepare this…

Such joy to see lovely colours of fruits and produce.

Polleria, everything about chicken here.

Cafeteria style read-to-eat food fares.

The Botifarres sausage is a Girona-Catalan specialty. Also spelled as Botiffara.

As well as the Mandonguilles Tomata is another Girona-Catalan specialty. Basically minced meatballs.

The fish section area.

Fresh huge chunks of salmon.

The dried and cured meat section is a destination on its own in every market in Spain that I always look forward to.

Mushrooms are great when sauteed with onions and garlic.

Outside the market hall are stands selling their produce as well.

And not just produce stands but non-food items as well such as clothes, shoes, accessories and more.
