Pinchos + Ratafia Lunch at Artusi in Barri Vell Girona

On my last day in Girona I went to the biggest food retail market in town called Mercat del Lleo which is located in the newer part across the river. After this delightful indoor market tour I went to the old town, colloquially called as Barri Vell to see the Arab Baths as well as to conduct my last stroll in town. It is my last day in the city and I want to savour every minute of the place as much as I can. Walking down on the cobbled stone streets, climbing the uneven stairs and exploring its ancient nooks and crannies.

For lunch I settled at this restaurant café in the middle of the old town. I just thought that its cute to sit here outside and watch people pass by. It is November and a weekend, there are not many tourists around except for locals going about their daily business.

When I stepped inside the restaurant café I was greeted with plates of pinchos ready for plucking. The sight makes me greedy. This is exactly why I love Spain. The food is amazing here, they come in small portions, and well what can I say, they are affordable.

I settled for two pinchos serving, a jamon and a vegetarian. Then I asked the bubbly waitress what she can recommend me for a local alcoholic drink. I told her it must come from this area and it must be strong. She pulled out this black bottle from Olot, a town in the north.

‘Ratafia’ she said. ‘You must try this with some ice.’

So I spent the next 45 minutes enjoying my fabulous light lunch while watching people go by. I can definitely spend my days like this when I retire.

And oh, the restaurant’s interior though is lovely. I can imagine a pleasurable dinner here spent as well.

The bar is ready to serve pinchos. People were mostly sitting outside at the other side of the restaurant cafe.

Grilled asparagus, aubergine and paprika, as well as mozarella and salmon with black sesame seeds.

My favourite, jamon iberico.

My drink, a Catalan Ratafia Russet from Olot. Ratafia also has versions in France, Italy, Switzerland and even Poland.

The view outside beside my table. Its a weekend so many shops are closed.

Ratafia is a very refined alcohol and is made from fruits, herbs, spices, flowers and roots. It is rather strong and sweet which is why you need to have a few ice cubes in it.

My pincho lunch: a jamon ibero and a grilled asparagus, aubergine and paprika. This is love. Definitely a 4.4 stars out of 5 =).

People watching + paparazzing =)

It is better to sit outside when the weather is nice. November in northern Spain is still very mild.

The interior of Restaurant Artusi, and of course every restaurant in Spain has its own jamon leg.
