Green Park Station: Farmer’s Market (Bath, England)

It is said that the oldest Farmer’s Market in Britain is the Farmer’s Market every Saturday (09:00 – 13:30) at the Green Park Station in Bath.

The Farmer’s Market is not that big. I managed to go around and did some tasting of the locally handmade sausages. I was quite tempted to try the fresh oysters as there were different types of vinaigrette sauces. I also spied some pies, quiches and sausage rolls but I wasn’t really in the mood to eat something heavy.

So I went around the market several times, taking everything slow, snapping pictures away, here and there and just enjoying the Saturday market atmosphere. Honestly, I like better the Farmer’s Market in York though.

At the back of Green Park Station is a big English supermarket chain so I went inside and found some items I couldn’t resist. A few of my all-time favourite comfort foods. They are not the healthiest but I really adore them and I tend to give in to these scrummy stuff every now and then… not everyday and not every week though.

  • Oven cooked crisps balsamic vinegar flavoured (I must admit that I do ration myself a bag of crisps weekly)
  • Jerky (this was Biltong from South Africa)
  • Pork Cracklings

Sometimes you search far and wide for certain gourmet foods at special farmer’s markets and never realise that what you are actually looking for is just around the corner, inside a chain supermarket.

Nevertheless, I like them both. I go to both. Supermarkets and markets =)

The Green Park Station is also home to shops, cafes and restaurants so you can come here during the day throughout the week. I believe there are other types of markets held here as well on other days.

Handmade sausage rolls.

Fresh produce (mostly organic) and fruits. I am a big fan of vegetables.

Fresh seafood. For such a small stall to have a lot of vareity.

I always have tomatoes at home. Our normal consumption is 2 boxes of these per week.

Traditional Somerset cheesemakers. I would love to explore the cheeses in England. What I only know is Cheddar and Stilton blue cheese.

Apple ciders and meat sauces.

Spiced sausages. I managed to taste one of these and it was very good.

Wild game steaks and sauages. Venison, habbits, boars, guinea fowl, goat, quail hares…

All kinds of pies. Lovett pies.

Did you know that oysters were food for the poor before? Times have changed =)

The different kinds of sauces for the oyster, I always prefer the simple way of dressing an oyster. Just lemon please.

Rhubharb stalks (top picture). Kale and green apples.

There were different kinds of quiches as well.

As you can see the market is not that big. I am shooting this from the back end of the market.

My not too healthy loot from the supermarket behind the farmer’s market =)
