Leadenhall Market in London City Financial Centre

One of the beautiful buildings to gaze at, especially at its interior, is the Leadenhall Market in the City of London financial district.

The building is old and dates back to the 14th century. I love the ornate gilded detailing of the walls and ceilings. To learn more go here: Leadenhall Market History

I came here on a Saturday so most of the food and commerical retail establishments were closed. Bad timing I know. During the weekdays though, this covered market is open and converted into an open-air food and market place. There are florists, butchers and fishmongers here, as well as vegetable and fruit shops, and of course, cheese and deli shops as well. Restaurants and cafes with outdoor terraces occupy the walkway which gives the place a charming feel and vibrant atmosphere during the day.

In the weekends it is very quiet here though without the crowds, but just perfect for picture taking. This is exactly what I did on a slow Saturday afternoon. Snapping away with my pocket camera. I hope I did justice to this lovely piece of historical architecture.

I would love to come back here during the week and have lunch at one of the cafes outside. I actually felt gutted that the market was not open on a Saturday but quickly reasoned out that this is a good excuse for me to come back to the city. The glass is half full!

The location of the market on the city map: I made a walking route here from the London Bridge to the Leadenhall Market. It is quite easy to find and not too far away. The nearest tube stop is Monument.

Trivia: Did you know that a few Harry Potter scenes were filmed here at the Leadenhall Market?

Allow me to start with a picture of moi =)

This is at Gracechurch Street entrance.

Really nice detailing here of the columns, walls and ceilings. The dragon sitting on the Ionic Roman column with a head piece and garland, they are all quite impressive.

Space here becomes time. The market’s arcade hallways are stunning. Leadenhall reminds me of Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II luxury shopping arcade.

The flag of London engraved on an architectural block tile on the lower base of the Ionic Roman columns.

A hallway of floating books. Very cool!

I will be back here for sure!
