Just a few days ago I managed to visit after work the Christmas Market at the Dom Cathedral in Cologne. I wish I could stay longer and visit the other Christmas markets but I have booked a scheduled train service back home to Utrecht, Netherlands that evening. A good thing though that this Christmas market is just beside the Cologne main train station. Handy.
There are certain things in Germany that certainly stays the same. She never disappoints when it comes to Christmas Markets.
In Cologne alone, there are 8 Christmas Markets. I know, that is a lot!
- The “Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market” (Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom – which is the one I visited thus this blog entry)
- The “Old Town Christmas Market” (Alter Markt) in front of Cologne’s Town Hall
- The “Home of the Heinzelmännchen” (Heimat der Heinzel) on Heumarkt which has a skating rink
- The “Angel Christmas Market” (Markt der Engel) on Neumarkt
- The “St. Nick’s Village” (Nikolausdorf) on Rudolfplatz
- The “Harbour Christmas Market” at the Chocolate Museum (quite near my office but never made it here as I was too busy)
- The gay-lesbian “Christmas Avenue Market” between Rudolfplatz and Schaafenstraße
- The “Christmas Market at the Stadtgarten”
The Christmas Markets in Germany usually goes for about 1 month, starting from the 23rd of November to the 23rd of December. It is one of the tourist attractions during the winter season, attracting many European neighbours to come and visit.
