The Mustafa Centre is M-A-S-S-I-V-E and it is open 24 hours! Totally beats the 7-11 stores.
It’s not your typical chic and flashy malls in Orchard. The Mustafa shopping centre is laid out in traditional department store style slash market set up. This means that the store is not particular about packaging and branding, but instead about quantity and availability.
The offering here is endless, from soaps to electronic gadgets to women’s accessories, textiles, kitchen stuff and watches… and more! The shopping centre is always full of locals, hunting down for the cheapest price of anything under the sun, even signature brands.
Mustafa reminds me of the Gaisanos in the Visayas (Philippines).
The family stayed here for more than an hour to shop. This is supposed to be my mom’s golden hour to shop to her heart’s content but unfortunately she is mobility challenged. We have only browsed through 1 floor and we have already given up. It must have been the chaotic market style set up of the goods? Nevertheless, shopping is taxing. I don’t have the patience to shop for hours but I managed to buy a sports scarf for Dutchman and moi which can be used for winter and skiing.
Two weeks ago before we went on our wintersport holiday in the French Alps this January, I watched a food travel show of Anthony Bourdain on TV featuring his 24-hour stay and food tasting in Singapore. In the show, he was brought by a local to Mustafa to experience the so-called real local shopping experience. I had to let out a huge smile. It is a confirmation that we did went to a place interesting enough to be recommended by a local =)
As I was busy browsing around, I do not really have pictures of Mustafa inside. However, below you will find my pictures of Little India at night.
