I am a Cologne (Köln) regular because of my work, and honestly speaking, the city is not really the most attractive in Germany’s collection of cities on offer. Many Cologne residents will, quite frankly, admit to this fact. There are really no cool hotspots sprouting all over the city like in Berlin for example, and I do not feel the spirit of fun and camaraderie here unlike in the Bavarian city of Munich (hmm, perhaps due to the abundance of biergartens there). Well, unless if it is Carnaval I guess?
Oh yes, right. Cologne is indeed the capital of Germany when it comes to the crazy yearly Carnaval festival and parade.
Cologne, the fourth largest city in Germany (after Berlin, Hamburg and Munich) has a lot of growing up to do in terms of becoming an attractive and exciting cosmopolitan city. It is still a traditional and low-profile city but the positive twist to this is that it gives the traveller a sense of the real local experience sans the outside influences. This is somewhat a refuge for the hardcore travellers who want to experience the raw surface of their travel destinations.
Last year during one of my overnights in the city I managed to visit the PANORAMA KölnTriangle building. The building’s observation deck gives visitors a fantastic panorama view of the old city. I highly recommend this to everyone visiting Cologne, and I hope you have good weather with you when you come here.
The observation panorama deck is open every day but do check out their opening hours in their website. During late spring to summer and early autumn they are open until 23:00.
The panorama building is a few minutes walking distance from the city centre. From the Dom Cathedral grounds or the Cologne central train station, walk to the direction of the Hohenzollern Bridge. As you walk on the bridge you will see the glass walled KölnTriangle building.
It’s totally worth the €3. They have discounts for groups and for disabled individuals. Children under 13 are free.
