Staying in an Auberge (de la Fontaine) in Montreal, Canada

I do not really have a favourite style of holidaying and this also goes to say that I am open to any kind of accommodation. Some places such as big cities are best handled with comfortable centrally located hotel stays. While small town cities would probably go well with personalised country feel B&B’s. Although I normally go with my gut feel on the property I choose, I also take a look at the availability of the offerings in the market. You have to see what is out there for you.

Now I use Booking dot com for my travel accommodation bookings and what’s nice about this platform is that when I search on a destination, I can then go to the map where I can see all the hotels and properties available on the dates I am searching. I can then further search afield, such as outside the city centre, in nearby suburbs or the next town. Since I normally book a rental car, parking for me is important and this is usually a challenge when holidaying or visiting cosmopolitan cities, thus alternative offerings with parking facilities in the suburbs or countryside are always welcome.

In Ottawa, I stayed in a lovely B&B villa (Domaine D’Amour). In Quebec I stayed in a rather simple  yet comfortable hotel outside the city because of parking concerns. In the Eastern Townships I stayed again in a B&B in a traditional wooden Victorian-style house. And here in Montreal I stayed in an Auberge (Auberge de la Fontaine) in a Victorian-style building in the neighbourhood of Le Plateau-Mont-Royal.

I heard about Le Plateau-Mont-Royal and was curious about it so I made sure to stay in the neighbourhood and found Auberge de la Fontaine. I wanted something outside the city centre, somewhere not overflowing with sightseers, and where I can have a peek at the normal Montreal city life without tourists. In my opinion, Le Plateau-Mont-Royal neighbourhood did not disappoint. If I was to move to this city, I would love to have an apartment right in the smack of this place. The neighbourhood is a bit low profile yet exudes an air of elegance and history. The Victorian-style apartments and houses really give so much charm and atmosphere to the area.

My room is quite big and is facing the street and the La Fontaine Park which I find quite nice and very soothing. It is not a busy street and the trees across the park gave me this zen feeling through the windows of my room. The bed was good.

Breakfast was okay, but I am not a big breakfast eater anyway. The auberge also offers snacks and drinks for free in the kitchen 24/7 which is really nice of them to do. Parking is available on the side street and is free but you would need to make sure of the times by checking the parking signs.

The only thing I did not like here were the stairs because there was no lift. I had to carry my large suitcase up and down over a flight of steep and narrow stairs! They gave me a room on the second floor. Oh well.

The breakfast area and my breakfast.

The very steep  and narrow staircase. I had to carry my big and heavy suitcase all the way up to my room, and then all the way down again.

La Plateau-Mont-Royal neighbourhood is charming isn’t it?

That is my rental car and my big and heavy suitcase I had to carry up and down the steep staircase!
