The Nightlife Terrace Scene in Belgrade at Knez Mihailova

For first timers in Belgrade (Beograd), the outdoor terrace scene at the 1-kilometre long main pedestrian shopping street, Knez Mihailova (Prince Michael Street or in Serbian Cyrilic: Улица Кнез Михаилова) is truly the best place to go.

Day or night, you cannot go wrong here!

I first discovered this place on my first night in the city. The outdoor cafe terrace scene in Belgrade is big! People, and I mean the locals, really hang out here at the cafe terraces. In fact, this terrace scene is a recurring theme that I noticed in Eastern Europe, which is definitely the most common denominator among the eastern-bloc countries. The outdoor cafe terrace scene has beyond doubt invaded en masse this part of the continent.

And oh, there is as well an outdoor terrace scene in winter! This is Eastern Europe for you. Well, in this case Beograd, Serbia.

What I also noticed is that people are not really drinking alcohol, but coffee! All sorts of coffee, from the traditional cafe to specialty flavoured ones. I have seen shakes and smoothies, even gourmet-style coffees for dessert. People drink coffee throughout the day and into the night in Serbia. They really push coffee commercialisaton to the limit. It is a trend, and let us see if it stays.

So yes, the outdoor terrace scene at Knez Mihailova (Улица Кнез Михаилова) is perhaps the best place to hangout in the evening. It is a jolly place and it is always busy, so if it is your first time, you know what to do and where to go.

I managed to take a short video of the terrace scene:

Where it is located on Google Maps:

As you can see on Google Maps there is a large concentration of coffee shops and restaurants in the intersection of Knez Mihailova and Kralja Petra. Some of the establishments are not even listed on Google Maps yet.

The street is the heart of Belgrade.

Must place to hang out in the evening for first timers in Belgrade.
