Pretty Pebble Bay Beach in Lefkada, Greece: Mikros Gialos Beach

Our summer holidays in the Greek islands are characterised by lazy mornings, long lazy brunches or lunches and long lazy afternoons at the beach. We do not really do much =)

One of the beaches we delighted ourselves in is the Mikros Gialos Beach in the southeastern part of the island. The beach is part of Poros mountain village and many people often refer to Mikros Gialos as Poros Beach. To get here you would need to follow the main road going south and exiting to Poros, then taking the right intersection road to Mikros Gialos just before reaching Poros village. Here is a post detailing on how we missed the intersection because the signage was on the ground covered with tall grass, and we ended up in Poros instead: Quick Glimpse of Poros Village.

Like many beaches in the Greek islands, Mikros Gialos beach is pebbly and is shaped like a bay blanketed by a lush surrounding. It is surely a very pretty beach! The waters here are very calm as well making it a great place to swim.

For the first time in our beach holiday I bought a pair of rubber beach shoes. You need covered beach shoes for the pebbly beaches in Greece.

Here is the good news: There are FREE SUNBEDS here at Mikros Gialos!

I did some online research ahead of time and found out that some of the tavernas are offering free sunbeds to their customers. So when we arrived, Dutchman and I quickly spread out to search where the free sunbeds were located. You can really only do this during low season because peak season would be impossible to find a sunbed unless you arrive early in the morning before 10:00. We are late risers and tend to leave the hotel or apartment between 14:00 and 15:00 so this is not a option for us.

We also got lucky that Dutchman was able to find parking easily. I can only imagine how difficult of a task this would be during peak holiday season. Which is why all the more reason to go around with a scooter on the island than with a car. Scooters are easy to maneuver and park. But we have the Dutch mother with us, for sure it would be an awkward scene to put her at the back of a scooter? Haha.

Dutchman was also, for the second time very lucky to have found the taverna offering free sunbeds! The Del Mare Restaurant & Cafe placed a signage on the beach which caught the Dutchman’s attention. He also found 3 unoccupied sunbeds! Just perfect! The stars have surely aligned for us.

We ordered 3 x frappes, a box serving of Kalamata black olives and local yoghurt with honey for our afternoon snacks. The frappes were a bit watery, helaas, so that was a bit of a let down. But the olives and yoghurt though were very nice and refreshing.

The rest of the afternoon was spent chilling out, eating and hydrating ourselves, swimming, sleeping a bit, people watching and reading a book. Quite a very busy afternoon huh? =)

Here is our driving route:

From Nydri where we were based for the summer holiday in Lefkada, to Mikros Gialis beach is about 21 minutes with the car. The last part of the drive is a narrow zigzagged road to the beach.

I rate Mikros Gialos quite high. It is a very nice and pretty beach!

Del Mare Restaurant Cafe offers free sunbeds for customers and this is my view.

There were a number of sailboats mooring nearby.

You can rent a banana or canoe boat. SUP (stand up paddling) is also popular.

This is our afternoon snacks that I ordered from Del Mare: 3 x frappes, a pack of black Kalamata olives and thick Greek yoghurt with honey. The frappes were not very good, they were a bit watery.

Another selfie with the beach =)

The grasshoppers here in the Greek islands are big! This one is clinging on to my bag.

Ah, my beach shoes! I bought them cheap in one of the shops in Nydri for 7 Euros =). You need these shoes to survive on a pebbly beach.
