Belgrade, Serbia: The Outdoor Cafe Terrace Scene on Flower Square (Cvetni Trg)

Have I said in my previous posts that the outdoor cafe terrace scene in Belgrade is impressive?

One of the benefits with walking around randomly in a new place is you come across unexpected cool places. In Belgrade, whilst walking on Kralja Milana, an important main avenue in the Vracar neighbourhood not too far away from Stari Grad (Old Town), I came across this remarkable Cvetni trg or the Flower Square. It is called the Flower Square because of the many flower shops located here in the past.

It’s a modern triangular square with steps where you will find a big outdoor cafe terrace scene. It is a bit ironic that its called a square when it is triangle in shape. I find it a very charming and an inviting piece of the city, and it seems to be always here. But I was blessed with good weather when I was there last March so I guess that helped a lot.

I also noticed that not many tourists come here since it is outside the old town but if you just follow Terazije all the way to Kralja Milana, you will see this square.

Here is the square on the map of Belgrade:

The walking distance from my hotel (Zepter Hotel) located on the fringes of Stari Grad (Old Town), just a stone’s throw away from Knez Mihailova, the main pedestrian street of the Old Town.

Interestingly, I checked out Google Maps street view which we all know is an older version of the actual street view now, some would go back to 5 years or more even, and I found an old not-really-that-attractive version of the square. So I further googled and learned that this triangular square has just recently opened last year (2015) after a reconstruction. I probably missed a few months construction site.

I further learned that this part of the Vracar neighbourhood was a forest before. It is hard to believe that this place used to be a massive wooded area covered with oak and ash trees. None of that remained.

On this square I also found a supermarket, which came really handy as I was searching for one. It is always a habit of mine to visit a local supermarket and check out what local food delicacies. Perhaps I may find something interesting to bring back home. I did! I found some dried cured sausages =)

This square is a great place to hang out!

Some of the buildings on this square are old and pretty looking.

I have no idea who this guy is because the description on the placque is in cyrillic.

The square is on Krajla Milana across the Yugoslav Drama Theatre and Manjez Park.

The square is designed with steps.

Mostly locals hang out here.
