Lefkada, Greece: Nydri Harbour and Marina by Day

It is amazingly hot today! *wipes sweat*

It is sub-tropical weather in the Netherlands. Well I must not complain after an autumn-week weather last week. It has been a crazy roller coaster summer of spring, summer and autumn weather, well there was even a day that it was 0C! And then this week it is back to summer again in this hopelessly unpredictable weather country. It can get really confusing but I have become so used to the fickle weather in Northern Europe. It is part of life here, so it seems.

Because it is so hot and humid today, I am reminded of our summer holiday last month in Lefkada Island, Greece. Wow, it already felt like a long time ago! Time just flew out the window. I am not getting any younger, haha. Time is constantly moving, never backwards but forward.

In Lefkada we stayed in Nydri, in the marina area beside the harbour. I was able to take shots of Nydri harbour and marina on several ocassions, whilst walking on the boulevard and from aboard a boat.

Nydri’s Harbour is perhaps the most touristy harbour in the island, along with runner-ups, Lefkada (capital) in the north and Vasiliki in the south. As early as 8AM the harbour is already open, busy preparing for the daily sailing of the boat tours to nearby islands and beaches.

Because of its strategic and practical location, Nydri is also the main harbour of the island where public ferries going to the other islands such as Meganisi, Ithaca and Kefalonia set sail from. The harbour is sheltered by the Geni peninsula and its inland lake/sea, the outlying islands and mainland Greece. The waters here are always calm says one of the locals we met. It bids placid waters to the seafarers as they set out to the open sea.

These pictures were taken during the day, or at least there was still daylight =)

The Nydri boulevard harbour is already busy in the morning, as early as 8am! Boat day tours and the public ferry to other islands leave from this harbour kicking off the daily activity in town.

Picture on top are the boats offering boat tours, visiting beaches and nearby islands. Booking of these boat tours can be done on the spot or through travel agencies all over the island.

We are having some cold Greek frappe at this bar cafe on the boulevard with the Dutch mother. On the menu cover are pictures of Aristotle Onassis, Jacqueline Kenndy-Onassis and Maria Callas. Onassis has an island in Lefkada which has been sold to a Russian oligarch, Rybolovlev.
