Postcards from Skopelos Island (Old Town)

For this Greek island summer holiday, we have visited neighbouring island Skopelos twice.

The first time was on an organised boat trip from Skiathos with Agios Nikolaos boat tours to its 2 nearby sister islands, Skopelos and Alonissos. We have only visited the capital towns of each island, Skopelos Old Town and Patitiri.

The second time we visited Skopelos, we did it independently taking the scooter with us on board on the ferry to Loutraki nearby Glossa, the 2nd largest settlement in Skopelos. It was a day to visit some of the highlights of the island and its beaches which I will for sure post an entry about in the near future.

For this post, these pictures were taken on our first trip to the island, during the organised boat trip. These are just a few pictures of the bazillion pictures we took of Skopelos!

Hopefully, you will be inspired to visit the Greek Islands with these pictures! Especially the Sporades group of islands. This is the old town of Skopelos Island.

Skopelos Island does not have an airport. The only way to reach the island is by ferry or boat. Regular large ferries (Anes Ferries and Hellenic Seaways), fast catamarans and hydrofoils go every day between end April/May and October. I am not sure of the schedule for winter season though.

Most people holidaying in Skopelos take the boat transportation options from nearby Skiathos (where there is an airport) or take the ferry from mainland Greece (in Volos for example).

Skopelos Old Town is hilly and it’s all stairs here! Many old people living here are used to climbing these steps on a daily basis.

It was a cloudy bluish day when we visited, but still hot.

There are so many churches and chapels in the Old Town alone, like in every level we went up and around the corner.

Skopelos has a bit of the Cyclades Islands influence but not quite much.

There are many local Greek artisan shops here in Skopelos Old Town and I noticed that prices are a bit lower than its popular and more developed for tourism sister, Skiathos. Well, of course.
