If you want to experience the authentic Paris, then you have got to take the Paris Metro to explore the city! It truly opens up to a whole new Parisian world. Seriously.
Trivia: Did you know that the metro in Paris is the second busiest metro in Europe after Moscow? And the tenth busiest in the whole world? It has more than 4 million daily commuters.
The Paris Metro has 16 lines, 303 stations with 62 transfers between lines and runs 214 kilometers, mostly underground.
The Metro de Paris, short for Metropolitain de Paris is one of my favourites to do and experience when I am in the city. I just really love using it.
The daily Parisian life revolves around this massive underground public transportation. The locals depend on this for their everyday commute to any destination within the city center. I can just imagine because driving in Paris is a nightmare. When I arrived in the city, I was stuck for hours on my way to the hotel! This level of traffic does not happen in the Netherlands.
I have been to many cities around the globe as well and the metro in Paris is one of the most interesting, very entertaining, artistic, historical and unique subways in the world. The architecture is influenced by the Art Nouveau Period. Whether its catchy art murals, striking architectonics, street musicians, suggestive billboard advertorials or locals quarreling (yes, we encountered them), there’s always something to see and experience in the Paris Metro.
My friend Pinpin also enjoyed the metro a lot. She felt very one and at home with it, changing lines and walking through tunnels and pretending she understood the directions in French, haha. She was mainly relying on me because there are no underground metros in Hawaii you know.
Hmm, it looks like Paris is growing on me… and I wouldn’t really mind going back again anytime soon for another quick getaway.
So these are some of the snapshots I took as we toured and enjoyed Paris with the metro.

ABBESSES Metro Station in MONTMARTRE. This is one of my favourites. There is a stairwell that is quite a climb but beautifully decorated with Montmatre scenes to encourage people to take it instead of the lift.
ANVERS Metro Station in Montmartre neighbourhood:
This is BARBES-ROCHECHOUART Metro Station which is near our hotel:
